How a room should be lived in..

How adorable is my talented stylist and blogger friend Naina’s daughter Arianna. We purchased this bed for the couple’s master bedroom. This is how a room should be used. Curl up in Mom’s sophisticated bed with a good bowl of cereal.

After 55 apartment visits in 1 month, Peter and I are homeowners! With plenty of usable, functional, renovatable square footage, we begin our wish list. From bookcases, kitchen countertops to wallpapered master bedrooms, our dreaming has begun. Stay tuned for photos along the way.

…women who crossed oceans, rolle up their sleeves, won the vote, raised kids, went off to work and still found time to bake. The did it with grace and style.

Naina’s blog covers fashion, food, motherhood, design and how to keep these areas a priority amidst our busy schedules. Reading her blog feels like having coffee with an old friend. Being a full time working Mom, Naina is honest and informative. She speaks a language all of us can relate too.

On top of it all, she has immense style. And when we began designing her office/guest room, I kept in mind her love of color; her ability to mix high and low priced items and her love of texture.

I photographed her in her space the other day.

Color

Naina Full Body

Naina is wearing Built by Wendy Bauhaus side tie reversible dress (Navy/purple) H&M bracelet, Anthropologie belt and Stuart Weitzman brown patent platform pumps.

Naina blends colors and details effortlessly. She is wearing a midnight blue silk dress with a beaded blue, brown and turquoise and patent leather brown heels. She accented it with a gold and brown bracelet. Like Naina’s predominantly blue outfit, we stuck with a strong blue color palette and accented it with brown and green accents.

Piece of advice? Pick a color you love. And add varying shades of that color and accent it with 2-3 pops of other colors.

High and Low

I believe the best wardrobes are a mix of high and low. Naina achieves this really well. I will admire a shirt she has on and it’s from H&M and then she’s mixed in some Stuart Weitzman shoes. I do this a lot for interiors too. Like here, West Elm tray and accessories and custom linen wrapped filing cabinets. Much like her outfit here, a dress from Flock in the South End mixed with a bracelet from …

Piece of Advice? Mix it up. Just because the price tags may be different doesn’t mean they can’t mingle together.

Texture

Texture is so key in fashion and interior design. You can be wearing the same color throughout or design a room in one color and texture can make it so intriguing. Naina used texture really well in her outfit here. Her silk dress juxtaposed against the patent leather heels. Since all the office furnishings were going to be white, I played up texture like in her desk chair.

Piece of advice? Linen and silk, wood and nickel. Combining textures quells the curious eye.

Thank you Naina for taking part in Closet Studies at the Design Lab! Until the next closet encounter…
